Will I get tan this way?

I'm so white! And I'm trying to start an early tan. It hasn't been very sunny out lately, the sun that does come I make sure I absorb some. I've been using baby oil and iodine after the shower all over my body, no sun. I heard the iodine will stain your skin and give you a pretty brown. Is this true? Would it be better to put it in water or is the baby oil fine?
