Why did Jesus use wine instead of whiskey or beer?

Distilled liquor wasn't around until at least the middle ages. Beer had been around since the ancient Egyptians (and probably even earlier), but it wasn't popular in Palestine for some reason. Besides, red wine looks a lot more like blood than beer, so it works better symbolically when you're performing an act of ritualistic cannibalism such as Communion..
