I have a question about fireplace maintenance?

I just started using my fireplace which I have never done on my own. Everything is going good as far as getting it lit and keeping it burning. But I have been using it for a few months now and the ash is really starting to build up under the grated shelf that the wood lays on. Should I leave the pile or should all the ash be removed? Also is it normal for the walls to be blackening?
